“I’m Just Not a Maths Person” — What to Do When Your Child Says This

It usually arrives mid-argument, somewhere around the third page of homework, in a flat voice: I’m just not a maths person.

Most parents respond in one of two ways. Either they push back — of course you are, you just need to practise — or they sympathise, and say the thing that feels kind and does the most damage: don’t worry, I was terrible at maths too.

Both responses miss what the sentence actually is. It isn’t a statement about maths. It is a child telling you they have found an explanation for a feeling, and the explanation lets them stop.

Why the sentence is so appealing

Sitting with confusion is genuinely unpleasant. There is a specific discomfort to looking at a problem and having no idea where to begin, and children feel it acutely because they usually assume the feeling is unique to them — that everyone else in the room understood it and they alone did not.

“I’m not a maths person” resolves that discomfort completely. It converts a temporary, painful state — I don’t understand this yet — into a permanent, painless identity — this was never going to work. It stops the bad feeling immediately. That is why children reach for it, and why it is so hard to talk them out of once it settles.

The trouble is what it costs. A child who believes ability is fixed has no reason to attempt anything difficult, because effort itself becomes evidence: if you were really good at this, it wouldn’t be hard. So they stop trying precisely at the moment when trying would help most, and their results confirm the belief, and the loop closes.

Why “I was rubbish at maths too” makes it worse

British parents say this constantly, almost always meaning well. It is intended as solidarity — you’re not a disappointment, this runs in the family, I’m not judging you.

What the child hears is confirmation. The belief is now inherited and therefore permanent, endorsed by the person whose opinion matters most, and there is no longer any point in pushing through the hard bit.

It is worth noticing how differently we treat this from reading. Almost no parent says “I was never a reading person” to a struggling reader. We treat reading difficulty as something to be worked on and maths difficulty as something to be diagnosed and accepted. Children pick that distinction up early, and it is entirely cultural — this pattern is far weaker in countries where struggle is openly framed as the normal texture of learning maths rather than a sign you have hit your ceiling.

What’s usually actually going on

In our experience, a child who says this almost never has a general problem with mathematics. They have a specific, locatable gap somewhere behind them, and everything built on top of it feels arbitrary.

The common ones:

Fractions. Unresolved fraction fluency makes algebra feel like nonsense, because algebra assumes you can manipulate them without thinking.

Negative numbers. A shaky grasp here quietly breaks solving equations, coordinates and directed number work all at once.

Times tables. Not for their own sake, but because a child computing 7 × 8 from scratch has no working memory left over for the actual problem in front of them.

The Year 7 jump. Secondary maths moves from concrete arithmetic to abstract reasoning quickly, and children who coped through primary by memorising procedures hit a wall when the procedures stop being obvious.

None of these look like a gap from the outside. They look like a child who is bad at maths. That is the whole problem — the symptom appears at the top of the subject while the cause sits several years lower down, and no amount of extra practice at the visible topic touches it.

What to say instead

Add the word “yet”. “I can’t do this” and “I can’t do this yet” are different sentences, and the difference is the entire argument. Use it lightly and consistently rather than making a lesson of it.

Praise the method, not the child. “You’re so clever” makes future difficulty threatening, because difficulty now implies you might not be. “That was a good way to check your answer” is about something they controlled and can repeat.

Name the feeling accurately. “This is the confusing bit, and it feels horrible, and it’s the bit right before you get it.” Children think the discomfort means they have failed. Telling them it means they are mid-learning is one of the more useful things you can do.

Talk about your own maths honestly. Not “I was terrible at it” but “I found it hard and nobody ever showed me why it worked.” This is true for most adults, and it reframes the family history as a teaching failure rather than a genetic one.

Go looking for the gap. Ask the maths teacher directly which specific topic the errors trace back to. Not “how is she doing” but “where does this break down”.

When to get help

If your child has been saying this for more than a term, if they are avoiding homework rather than struggling with it, or if their confidence has visibly dropped since starting secondary school, it is worth having someone diagnose where the actual gap sits.

The work of undoing this is rarely about drilling harder. It is about finding the missing foundation, rebuilding it until it is genuinely solid, and letting the child experience the thing they have stopped believing is possible — a hard problem going in, and coming out understood.

That single experience does more for the belief than any amount of encouragement.

Is being good at maths genetic?

Genuine mathematical learning difficulties such as dyscalculia exist and affect a small minority of children. For most, persistent difficulty traces back to specific unaddressed gaps rather than fixed ability.

My child says they hate maths. Is that the same thing?

Usually. Sustained dislike of a subject is much more often the result of repeatedly not understanding it than the cause. Confidence tends to follow competence rather than the reverse.

Should I tell my child I was bad at maths too?

Try not to. It is meant as reassurance but is usually heard as confirmation that the difficulty is inherited and permanent. Saying you found it hard because it was badly explained is both truer and more useful.
